64220 ~ 19 ~Located on the north side of the Lincoln Highway at the western approach to Gettysburg are those three memorials. They stand on McPherson's Ridge and where the great battle opened, July 1st, 1863. At the base of the monument to General Buford, in the foreground, is the cannon from which was fired the first shot of the battle. General Reynolds was killed early in the engagement.
